Job Summary • The Accountant I is a mid-level officer in the Bursary Department responsible for preparing financial records, processing payments, maintaining ledgers, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations of the school.
• The role reports to the Senior Accountant/Principal Accountant.II.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
• Financial Operations Prepare payment vouchers, post transactions, and maintain cash books, ledgers, and journalsProcess staff salaries, allowances, pensions, and student-related payments via GIFMIS/TSA
• Reconcile bank statements, sub-accounts, and imprest accounts monthlyAssist in preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statementsMaintain fixed assets register and conduct periodic verification
Revenue & Expenditure Control:
• Verify and process student school fees, acceptance fees, and other IGR collections
• Examine payment claims, invoices, and supporting documents for accuracy and compliance
• Ensure all expenditures comply with Financial Regulations, Public Procurement Act, and Polytechnic policies
• Monitor budget performance and prepare variance analysis reports
Audit & Compliance:
• Liaise with internal and external auditors; provide required schedules and documents
• Ensure proper filing and safekeeping of financial records for audit trailImplement audit queries and management recommendations promptly
General Administration:
• Use accounting software: GIFMIS, TSA, Sage, QuickBooks, or Polytechnic ERP
• Supervise Accounts Clerks and Accounts Assistants where assigned
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Bursar or Senior AccountantIII.
Requirements
• Educational Qualification: BSc/HND in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline from a recognized institution
• Must be a registered student member or possess ICAN, ANAN, ACCA, CPAB.
• Experience: Minimum 3 years post-NYSC cognate experience in accounting/auditing
• Experience in a tertiary institution, government MDA, or public sector is an advantage
Skills & Competencies
• Strong knowledge of IPSAS, Financial Regulations, and Public Sector AccountingHigh level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail
• Proficient in MS Excel, accounting software, and government payment platformsGood analytical, communication, and report writing skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet statutory deadlines
• Must reside in clos proximity to Ejigbo.
