Job Summary
The Senior OPD Nurse (Oncology Specialist) will oversee the daily clinical operations of the Outpatient Department while acting as the primary clinical lead for oncology patients. This role requires a blend of exceptional outpatient coordination and deep oncology expertise. The successful candidate will manage complex chemotherapy administration, provide specialized supportive care, coordinate multidisciplinary treatment plans, and mentor junior nursing staff to ensure the highest standards of oncology patient safety and satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
• Specialized Oncology & Chemotherapy Care
• Safe Administration: Safely mix, double-check, and administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, and targeted oncology medications via peripheral lines, PICC lines, and implanted ports, following international safety standards.
• Symptom & Side-Effect Management: Proactively assess, monitor, and manage acute treatment side effects (e.g., neutropenia, nausea, infusion reactions, oncologic emergencies).
• Patient Education & Counseling: Provide comprehensive pre-treatment and post-treatment counseling to oncology patients and their families regarding treatment cycles, dietary adjustments, and home-care protocols.
• OPD Clinical Operations & Leadership
• Clinic Coordination: Oversee daily outpatient clinic flows, managing patient triaging, consultation scheduling, and diagnostic workups efficiently to minimize wait times and advocating for patient comfort and accessibility.
• Multidisciplinary Liaison: Work closely with visiting Oncologists, Gastroenterologists, Surgeons, and Pharmacists to ensure seamless continuity of care.
• Quality & Records Management: Maintain flawless, confidential electronic medical records (EMR), tracking oncology protocols, staging, and treatment timelines accurately.
• Mentorship: Guide and mentor junior OPD nurses, fostering a culture of continuous learning, strict clinical competence, and clinical empathy.
• End-to-End Patient Support: Direct outpatient clinic flows,Palliative & Supportive Care
• Holistic Pain Management: Utilize advanced oncology training to assess, monitor, and manage complex pain and distressing physical symptoms for oncology patients.
• End-of-Life & Comfort Care: Apply formal training or experience in palliative care to deliver compassionate, dignified support to patients and families navigating advanced or terminal stages of illness.
• Psychosocial Support: Offer continuous emotional and psychological navigation for patients coping with chronic, life-limiting diagnoses.
• Hazardous Drug Safety: Enforce strict compliance with OSHA and institutional guidelines regarding the safe handling, disposal, and spill management of cytotoxic (chemotherapy) agents.
• Infection Prevention: Implement rigorous infection control protocols, recognizing that oncology patients are highly immunocompromised.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
• Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNSc) or a Diploma in General Nursing.
• Licensure: Valid and current license with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
• Oncology Specialization: Must be a fully oncology-trained nurse with a registered Post-Basic Certification in Oncology Nursing (or an equivalent recognized oncology specialization framework).
• Palliative Care: Proven clinical experience or formal training in Palliative Care is strictly required.
Experience:
• Minimum of 7 years of total nursing experience, with at least 5 years of dedicated clinical experience in an Oncology unit/clinic.
• Proven experience in an Outpatient Department (OPD) or ambulatory care setting is highly desirable.
Core Competencies
• Proficient in venous access management (cannulation, port access, central venous line care) and mathematical accuracy for drug dose calculations.
• High emotional intelligence, exceptional patient-advocacy skills, strong crisis-management capability, and professional verbal communication.
• Strong coordination and patient support skills with a track record of managing complex patient navigation pathways.
